The successful operation of large-scale solar and battery storage plants depends on reliable monitoring, intelligent control systems and secure communication networks. As renewable energy infrastructure becomes more complex, SCADA and plant control systems are essential to ensuring grid compliance, operational performance and long-term reliability.
At SUNOTEC, we bring these technologies together.
As an international system integrator of large-scale renewable energy infrastructure, SUNOTEC has delivered more than 680 projects with over 15 GW of installed renewable energy capacity. Our teams work across power generation, battery energy storage, grid infrastructure and lifecycle services, delivering integrated energy systems across Europe.
As our EPC business continues to grow, we're looking for an experienced SCADA Manager to join our team in Munich, Germany.
Why this role matters:
SCADA systems connect the technical components of a renewable energy plant, enabling reliable monitoring, coordinated control and secure communication with grid operators and external systems.
As our SCADA Manager, you'll take technical ownership of the monitoring, control, communication and OT cybersecurity scope of utility-scale PV, BESS and hybrid power plants, from initial design and procurement through commissioning, grid compliance testing and handover to operations.
Working closely with engineering teams, project managers, suppliers, clients and grid operators, you'll ensure our systems meet demanding technical, regulatory and cybersecurity requirements while supporting the successful delivery of complex energy infrastructure projects.
Where you'll make an impact:
- Lead SCADA and control system engineering for utility-scale PV, BESS and hybrid power plants, defining system architectures, communication networks and interfaces between SCADA, PPC, EMS, inverters, BESS components and substation systems;
- Ensure grid code compliance by specifying and verifying plant control functions in line with German grid connection requirements (VDE-AR-N 4110/4120/4130), including active and reactive power control, voltage regulation and grid operator telecontrol;
- Take ownership of OT cybersecurity across SCADA, PPC/EMS and communication systems, applying IEC 62443 principles to network segmentation, secure remote access, risk assessments and supplier security requirements;
- Manage the technical scope of suppliers and subcontractors, from tender evaluation and technical specifications to procurement support, design reviews, delivery schedules and quality assurance;
- Lead commissioning and system testing, including FAT, SAT, integrated system tests and grid compliance testing, ensuring reliable operation and successful certification of plant control and communication systems;
- Support BESS integration and operational performance, coordinating EMS functionality, operating modes and interfaces with external systems, including direct marketers and virtual power plants;
- Own the SCADA scope across multiple projects, managing technical risks, budgets, timelines and stakeholder coordination to ensure successful delivery and handover to clients and O&M teams;
- Develop and improve SUNOTEC's SCADA engineering standards, using project experience, operational data and lessons learned to strengthen system reliability, technical consistency and future project delivery.
What will help you succeed:
- A degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent vocational qualifications supported by relevant professional experience;
- At least 5 years of hands-on experience in SCADA and automation engineering for power plants, particularly utility-scale solar PV projects, including system design, commissioning and optimization;
- Proven experience managing SCADA systems throughout the project lifecycle, ideally within an EPC or renewable energy engineering environment;
- Strong technical knowledge of SCADA architectures, PPC/EMS systems, industrial communication networks and protocols such as IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-104, Modbus TCP/RTU and OPC UA;
- Good understanding of German grid connection requirements (particularly VDE-AR-N 4110/4120), plant control functions and grid compliance certification processes;
- Working knowledge of OT cybersecurity principles and the IEC 62443 standards, with the ability to incorporate security requirements into system design and supplier management;
- The ability to coordinate complex technical activities across multiple projects, make sound engineering decisions and resolve issues with suppliers, clients and project teams;
- Fluency in both German and English, written and spoken, to work effectively with local grid operators, clients and international colleagues;
- Willingness to travel to project sites, suppliers and clients in Germany and internationally (approximately 20% of working time).
It would be an advantage if you also bring:
- Experience with BESS projects, including EMS, BMS and PCS integration, battery operating modes and hybrid plant control;
- Familiarity with Redispatch 2.0, direct marketer interfaces and grid operator telecontrol requirements;
- Hands-on experience with SCADA and PPC solutions from suppliers such as meteocontrol, SMA, Sungrow or Huawei;
- Experience leading technical teams and managing engineering suppliers or subcontractors;
- Formal IEC 62443 training or certification, or knowledge of ISO/IEC 27001/27019;
- Experience with EPLAN, AutoCAD, IEC 61724 performance testing or international renewable energy projects.
Why you'll enjoy working here:
You'll have the opportunity to take technical ownership of SCADA systems for large-scale renewable energy projects, working across solar PV, battery storage and hybrid power plant technologies.
Your work will have a direct impact on how our plants operate, communicate with the grid and meet demanding technical and cybersecurity standards. You'll be involved throughout the project lifecycle, with the autonomy to make engineering decisions and contribute to the development of our technical standards.
You'll also collaborate with experienced engineers, project managers and technology partners across Europe, working on complex projects that bring together different disciplines and technologies.
And because we want you to feel supported and valued, here's what you can expect as part of our Munich team:
- A remuneration package reflecting your experience and the responsibilities of the role.
- 30 days of paid annual leave per year.
- A fully covered Deutschlandticket, supporting your daily commute and travel on local and regional public transport.
- An employer contribution to a company pension insurance plan (Direktversicherung).
- Access to EGYM Wellpass, with the majority of the membership cost covered by SUNOTEC.
- Complimentary coffee and beverages at the office.
- Team-building activities, company celebrations and events that bring colleagues together beyond their daily work.
